Read full description of the books:
Book 1 is about the son. Book 2 is about the father.
What drives us to question our beliefs? What drives us to realize our beliefs? If one world is horrible, will the new one be better or more of the same? What causes the change from "improve the world" to "destroy the world" and is it necessary to have both?
Oh, the questions that this book (and Book 1) tackles. Written in the same "relate the facts and just the facts, ma'am" style that borders on Biblical - but not quite IS Biblical - we go deeper into the revolution and deeper into madness. As another reviewer stated, this book is a little faster and a little more action oriented than the first. It helps move everything along to its conclusion ... one that would not have been imaginable during the first book.
And do we get more about the writers of this book? Yes.
And do we get know why no one knows what Katherine looks like? Yes.
Is there any book that wraps up its loose threads so completely? Not that I know of. Oh sure, there are other questions brought forth during the last few pages, but they are rightfully left unanswered.
Again, I highly recommend this two book novel.
Are there reasons - besides monetary - for the splitting of this novel into two books? Are they different enough? Are they truly a two novel set, not one novel split into two?
Think of The Lord Of The Rings. Originally envisioned as one book and split into three (of course, recently combined into a single volume) and that is how I see The Avian Gospels. Besides having two covers that accurately describe the situation (first just a couple of birds grace the cover, then the title is obscured by the amount of birds on the cover), the two books also are about different sections. Again, LotR starts with a single narrative and, at The Two Towers, splits into a different style of narration (bouncing between different characters). Though Avian Gospels doesn't switch narration styles between the two books, the tone is drastically different. I'm sure it would have been a natural arc from one book to the other, but the act of opening a whole different cover emphasizes the difference between tone. As hinted above, Book 1 also focuses on the son, Morgan, where Book 2 is all about the father, Zvominir also known as The Bird Man. Book 1 is the horrors faced before the war. Book 2 is the horrors faced during war.
In many ways, the two books parallel each other (both start with a brief section from the past that helps describe the fathers' motives in the current book) and could start a discussion on the yin-yang nature of the different people involved. Who is the Jungian Shadow of "x" ... Both characters will get their due. Some are mirrors of each other, holding reverse character arcs.
What the second book does is allow for those distinctions to be overemphasized a bit more, and - though I would have preferred a single book edition - I can appreciate that and understand it.
So it's worth your $20 to get both. Do it now!
