JESUS. Sometimes he wanted to kick his own ass for the way he'd been treating her since their reintroduction.
This hero was a jerk. When he was 18, Billy met Eve and they dated for three months. She promised she'd wait for him while he was training to be a Navy SEAL, but she didn't. And she married someone else.
Now. Was this bad? Of course. Should she have waited for Billy? Of course.
But the fact is that this was 12 years ago and he's never forgiven her or let go of his hurt and anger.
Now someone is gunning for Eve. There's been 3 attempts on her life. In desperation, she turns to Billy and his friends at Black Knights Inc. for protection.
Then you have to read about 300 pages of Billy being mean to Eve and making her cry. :(
Now. Billy isn't an asshole hero like "This guy is a jerk because being a jerk is attractive," you know, alpha-male shit. Instead it's more like, "Oh, she hurt him so bad - how can he ever trust and love her again?" But it still amounts to being an asshole. You've got a scared, vulnerable woman - who not only is being attacked by people who want her dead, but also struggles with shyness and an overbearing controlling father. She's an innocent and a very kind and sweet person.
To see Billy verbally smacking her around all the time is just heartcrushing to this reader. I wanted Billy to stop being such a moron. It's obvious that Eve never stopped loving Billy and it's very obvious that her asshole father strongarmed her into dating another man and eventually marrying him. The fact that Billy is so harsh and unforgiving towards Eve until the very, very end of the book had me rabid.
Okay. If you put that issue aside, this romance novel was actually pretty good. The plot is entertaining, Walker always gets some laughs in. Even though Billy isn't a very likable hero, Eve is a very likable heroine. She's so shy and sweet and kind, but has been really pushing and challenging herself to be more brave, so she is now an expert driver, able to defend herself physically, and is a damn good shot. It's really touching to read about her facing her fears and being so brave when that kind of stuff doesn't come naturally to her.
Another bad thing about this book I want to mention is Walker's tendency to include very strange sexist rhetoric in her novels. It's bizarre. I addressed this in my review of Thrill Ride. It rears its ugly head here, too. For instance:
They were women, so they clung to each other and cried together, taking strength and lending it in the way only females of the species could do.
Or what about this little weird comment:
Men! They stomped around each other, taking bites, when the truth was they should just whip 'em out and measure, solve everything just like that.
And, if she was a betting woman - which she so totally was - Bill would win that little competition hands down. HANDS being the operative word. Because Bill's were big and square and strong-looking, while Patrick Edens's were long and thin and almost feminine. And in her experience that old wives' tale about the size of a man's hands compared to the size of his... erm... BITS was right far more times than it was wrong.
I have to tell you that I expect a bit of sexism in my romance novels. And usually it doesn't bother me - but then again, usually it runs more towards stuff like "he was so big and manly! She was so small and delicate and female!" This, on the other hand, is not only more insulting and offensive (to both men and women, I might add) but also very weird and rather out of place in the text. I'm really struggling to understand why Walker feels the need to include these little diatribes. o.O
How's the sex, Carmen?
It's good, it's good actually. Not AMAZING, but not bad. I can't believe Eve even agrees to have sex with him after how he treated her during the book, though. Best believe I wouldn't let him touch me. o.O
Tl;dr - Now that I'm reading over this review, it comes off as if I thought this book was bad. But it wasn't bad. The plot was good, the heroine was good, it made me smile a few times. It had its flaws, but overall I'd say it was one of the stronger entries in this series.
P.S. Also, there's fat-shaming in this. Like I've said before, Walker never fat-shames women, but men who are fat are mocked and scorned in this series. It's annoying.
